Contour Like It's 2020

This is a contouring tutorial for beginners, but also for everyone.

As the goal is not to dramatically change your face shape anymore; that is so last year.

Your face is fabulous as is!

You just want to enhance the shape of the face you already have.

Interestingly enough, the origin of dramatic contouring did not come from Instagram.

It came from Drag Queens. Who really do want to change the shape of their face.

Mainstream

Only in the last few years did contouring become mainstream, and oh so popular.

That said, there is no need for changing your face shape anymore - this is 2020 - for better or worse. Amiright?

And you don't even need to know your face shape.

The goal with contouring now, is to subtly create depth and dimension, simply by creating well-placed shadows. Where you want them.

But it doesn't need to be drastic.

Your mantra? Less is more

Under the cheekbones to create the illusion of elevated cheekbones.

Embrace your natural shape.

Be realistic.

Contour Vs. Bronzing

Let's not confuse contour and bronzer.

Under the jawline and chin to create illusion of a firmer jawline and chin.

A bronzer can be shimmer/ sheen or matte.

Contour is always matte

When bronzing think sunlit.

When contouring think shadows.

Bronzing warms up the complexion - as in a sunlit face.

Contour creates depth and dimension.

Application

Contouring is done at the end of your makeup application. Finish your face with contour to add dimension.

The Correct Tools

If you want softer contours - choose a fluffy angled brush.

If you want a chiseled look go for blunt bristles, such as our Flat Top Buffer Brush.

For sides of nose choose smaller shading brush, like the Fluffy Shading Brush.

Along the sides of your nose to slim

Once foundation is applied your face can look a little flat.

Add your dimension with contouring (and color with bronzer).

1. Underneath cheekbones (in the hollow) to create depth and 'lift'.

2. At jawline and hairline to define.

3. The sides and tip of your nose to chisel your features.
