My Skin at 64: What Actually Supports Healthy, Strong, Glowing Skin Over Time

smiling woman with healthy, glowing skin.

At 64, I’m often asked a version of the same question: “What’s the secret to your skin?”

The truth is, there isn’t just one.

What you’re seeing is not perfection. It’s skin that has been supported, consistently, over time.

If you look closely, you’ll see it all:

  • Dark spots
  • Fine lines
  • Changes in texture
  • Even a basal cell carcinoma scar

My skin is smooth overall, but it has lived. And I don’t try to erase that.

What I do focus on is supporting it so it stays strong, responsive, and healthy as I age.

What Healthy Skin at 64 Really Looks Like

There’s a misconception that good skin means flawless skin. It doesn’t.

Healthy skin has texture. It changes. It reflects your life, your environment, and your habits.

What matters is how your skin functions: Is it resilient? Is it supported? Does it respond well to care?

That’s the standard I focus on.

The Foundation: Simple, Proven Skincare

I don’t rely on complicated routines. I come back to what works, and I stay consistent with it.

In the morning:

  • A well-formulated vitamin C to support brightness and protect against environmental stress
  • Daily mineral sunscreen (non-negotiable)

At night:

  • Retinoids to support skin renewal and collagen production

These are foundational. They’re not trends. They’re long-term tools.

Why Sunscreen Is the Most Important Step

If there is one habit that has made the biggest difference, it’s daily sunscreen.

Sun exposure is responsible for the majority of visible skin aging: texture changes, dark spots, and loss of firmness.

I apply sunscreen every day, not just on my face, but on my neck, chest, and hands.

It’s not about doing more. It’s about making sure my skin is properly protected.

Supporting Skin Turnover and Texture

As skin matures, natural cell turnover slows down.

To support this, I use gentle at-home exfoliation to help keep my skin smooth and responsive. Nothing aggressive that compromises the skin barrier. Just consistent, supportive care.

At-Home Treatments That Support Collagen

couple doing at-home treatments for better skin.

I also incorporate at-home technologies that support my skin at a deeper level.

These treatments work differently, but both support collagen production and help maintain skin structure over time.

I think of them as long-term investments in how my skin functions, not quick fixes.

In-Office Treatments for Deeper Support

There are limits to what topical skincare and at-home treatments can do. That’s where in-office treatments come in.

Once a year, I do a CoolPeel CO2 laser to:

  • Support collagen
  • Improve texture
  • Keep my skin strong and responsive

I also choose to do Botox 3–4 times per year, not to change how I look, but to soften expression lines and maintain a more relaxed appearance.

These are personal choices, and part of how I support my skin over time.

Supporting Skin From the Inside Out

What you do internally shows up externally.

I support my skin with:

  • Collagen supplementation
  • Omega-3 fatty acids
  • Daily nutrients that support overall skin health

I also eat in a way that supports my body:

  • Plant-forward
  • High-protein
  • Nutrient-dense

And I strength train regularly, which has a bigger impact on skin, structure, and overall aging than most people realize.

The Role of Sleep and Recovery

Sleep is where repair happens. It’s where your skin recovers, rebuilds, and resets.

I treat sleep and recovery as essential, not optional. Because no product can replace what your body does naturally when it’s well-rested.

Makeup That Works With My Skin

When I wear makeup, I keep it simple.

If I use foundation, it’s a mineral powder: lightweight, breathable, and forgiving on mature skin. Most days, I rely on tinted mineral sunscreen instead. It evens out my skin tone while continuing to protect it.

Again, it comes back to simplicity and function.

The Bottom Line

There is no single “secret” to healthy skin at 64.

It’s the result of:

  • Consistency
  • Protection
  • Supporting your skin from the inside and out
  • And choosing what actually works over time

Your skin reflects what you do repeatedly... not occasionally.

And the good news is, it responds when you support it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the most important step in an anti-aging skincare routine?
Daily sunscreen. Without consistent sun protection, other skincare efforts will be less effective.
  • Can skin really improve after 60?
Yes. While aging is natural, skin can become stronger, smoother, and more resilient with consistent support.
  • Do I need both vitamin C and retinoids?
They serve different purposes. Vitamin C protects and brightens, while retinoids support renewal and collagen production.
  • Are at-home devices like red light therapy effective?
When used consistently, they can support skin function, collagen production, and overall skin health.
  • How often should I do professional treatments?
It depends on your goals, but many people benefit from periodic treatments like laser resurfacing to support long-term skin health.
  • Does diet really affect skin?
Yes. Nutrient intake, protein, and healthy fats all support skin structure, hydration, and repair.
  • Is it too late to start a skincare routine later in life?
No. Skin responds to care at any age. Consistency is more important than when you start.
