Can You Get A Full Coverage Application With Mineral Foundation? Oh, Yes. 

One of the most important steps in creating a full coverage look with mineral foundation is to choose the correct mineral foundation for your needs.

A light coverage formula will not be able to give you your desired full coverage look– since it’s designed to do exactly the opposite!

But the good news is all but one (Ultra Light Formula) of our formulas are specifically designed to give you buildable and totally full coverage.

 Liquid + Powder = Full Coverage

I recommend a combination of our Liquid Antioxidant Foundation Formula along with our Sensy Rich Foundation Formula if you want to achieve a truly full coverage and super long lasting look– as in you will not be able to see your skin, it will really give you a totally traditional full coverage look.

I rarely ever use both of these in combination with each other because I don’t feel I need to, so if you prefer to simply opt for one, choose the Sensy Rich Formula. 

When they are combined, however, they will give you absolutely outstanding coverage (as you will see below!).

The Correct Tools

For Your Liquid Foundation

Another important piece to consider is your tools.

In this tutorial, I use a damp sponge to evenly apply the liquid foundation in the first layer. 

Note: I would recommend using a rounded blending sponge as opposed to the one I use in this post– I usually use my rounded blending sponge which works even better, but my cat discovered it as I was laying everything out in preparation for this post (unbeknownst to me) and made short work of it so I have to get another. 

Alternatively you could use our beautiful Foundation Air Brush. 

For Your Powder Foundation

The Flat Top Buffer Brush is what I have found works the absolute best in applying a full coverage loose mineral foundation with a super smooth, buffed out finish without sacrificing any of the coverage.

Some prefer the Ultimate Kabuki Brush (which I also love and use regularly), so it’s worth a shot with both to see which one fits your needs best.

Note from Lisa: I recommend the Flat Top Buffer for the Sensy Rich Formula. 

It’s hard to go wrong with either as they are both very lovely and high quality brushes that do their jobs wonderfully well! (And, did we mention they are also both vegan and 100% cruelty free?)

Get Started

First things first– wash your face to make sure you are working with a clean canvas, and then moisturize immediately after to lock in the moisture and ensure your skin will not absorb your foundation unnecessarily into any dry patches, etc.

Be sure and wait at least five, maybe ten minutes for your moisturizer to absorb sufficiently and allow your foundation the smoothest, best application!

If Using the Sponge

When you are ready, run some lukewarm water and fully wet your sponge, then squeeze out the excess water so you have a damp, supple blending sponge to work with for the next step.

Put a couple of pumps of the Liquid Antioxidant Foundation onto the back of your hand and pick up a little on the damp sponge, then with almost a stamping motion use the sponge to “pat” the foundation onto your face.

I like to do this step with light, quick little pats with the sponge over and over until each area of my face is adequately covered.

This method will both give you incredible coverage as well as make sure you don’t get any streaks or uneven spots during the application.

You can keep adding more foundation with this technique until you are satisfied and ready to move onto the next step! 

 Apply Your Loose Mineral Powder 

Next, swirl and tap some of your Sensy Rich Foundation onto your Flat Top Buffer Brush and apply over the top of your first layer of the Liquid Antioxidant Foundation with little circular buffing motions.

You can add as little or as much of this as you would like until you have reached your desired result!

Matte Finish

At this point you will have an ultra-matte finish on your foundation.

If you would like to add a little bit of dimension and glow into the look you can lightly sweep a tiny bit of Silk Splendor Finish Powder all over with our Powder Buffer Brush (this is what I did here!), or one of our Radiance Powders, but if you prefer the matte look you can simply move onto the rest of your makeup routine after you are done applying the Sensy Rich Foundation.

 Compare

You can see there is a big difference in these before and after photos!

I always have a bit of lingering hyperpigmentation (some from over a year ago– mine always fade so slowly) so I do appreciate a fuller coverage foundation look.

You can really tell how well just the foundation covered all of it up! (None of the before or after photos were at all touched up, so you can definitely see the difference just the foundation here makes!)
