How To Contour For Beginners

contour powders.

Contouring has gotten a bit of a reputation over the years.

For many women, the word "contour" brings to mind heavy stripes of makeup, complicated diagrams, and social media tutorials that seem to require an art degree to follow.

But real-life contouring doesn't have to look like that.

In fact, the best contouring is often the contouring nobody notices.

Done correctly, contouring simply restores dimension to the face. It adds subtle definition, creates gentle shadows where they naturally belong, and helps your features look a little more lifted and refreshed.

At Simple Beauty Minerals, we're big believers in enhancing what you already have rather than covering it up.

Let's keep contouring simple.

What Is Contouring?

Only in the last few years did contouring become mainstream, and oh so popular.

That said, there is no need for changing your face shape anymore for better or worse. Amiright?

And you don't even need to know your face shape.

The goal with contouring now, is to subtly create depth and dimension, simply by creating well-placed shadows. Where you want them.

But it doesn't need to be drastic.

Your mantra? Less is more.

Under the cheekbones to create the illusion of elevated cheekbones.

Embrace your natural shape.

Be realistic.

Contour vs. Bronzer: What's the Difference?

Many women use these terms interchangeably, but they serve different purposes. Let's not confuse contour and bronzer.

Under the jawline and chin to create illusion of a firmer jawline and chin.

A bronzer can be shimmer/ sheen or matte.

Contour is always matte

When bronzing, think sunlit.

When contouring, think shadows.

Bronzing warms up the complexion - as in a sunlit face.

Contour creates depth and dimension.

Application

Contouring is done at the end of your makeup application. Finish your face with contour to add dimension.

The Correct Tools

If you want softer contours, choose a Fluffy Angled Brush.

If you want a chiseled look go for blunt bristles, such as our Contour Brush.

For sides of nose choose smaller shading brush, like the Fluffy Shading Brush

Along the sides of your nose to slim

Once foundation is applied your face can look a little flat.

Add your dimension with contouring (and color with bronzer).

1. Underneath cheekbones (in the hollow) to create depth and 'lift'.

2. At jawline and hairline to define.

3. The sides and tip of your nose to chisel your features.
