Why I Chose The Omnilux Contour Face Mask for My Mature Skin

Why I Chose the Omnilux Contour Face Mask for My Mature Skin

I've been using red light therapy for years.

Before the Omnilux, I had a LightStim handheld device that I used pretty regularly. I liked it, but honestly, doing my whole face took a while. You treat one area, move it, wait, move it again. Not terrible, but not exactly something I looked forward to either.

When full-face LED masks started becoming more common, I noticed. I thought several times that I should probably get one, but I already owned the LightStim. Did I really need another device?

So I kept using what I had.

Then my 26-year-old daughter decided she wanted an LED mask.

She wanted to start using one early, more preventatively, and that finally got me looking seriously at the newer masks. Somewhere in the middle of researching hers, I started thinking, wait a minute, maybe I'm the one who really needs this.

I compared brands, wavelengths, treatment times, research, reviews and, of course, price. Some of these masks are expensive, and I wasn't interested in spending several hundred dollars just because one had better marketing. I wanted to know if there was actually a difference.

By the time I was finished, my reaction was basically, why am I not already doing this?

I'm 65. Maintaining collagen and firmness is a big priority for me now, and I'd already been using red light for years. At this point, I mostly wanted a faster, easier way to do it.

Switching from the LightStim to a full-face mask just made sense.

Why I Chose Omnilux

For myself, I chose the Omnilux Contour Face Mask.

It wasn't the cheapest option, and I went back and forth a little because of that. I don't believe that paying more automatically gets you a better skincare product. Sometimes you're paying for a name. Sometimes you're paying for prettier packaging.

But I kept coming back to Omnilux because it had been around for a long time, there was actual research behind the technology, and I liked what I was seeing when I compared the specs.

And I know myself. If I bought the cheaper one when I really wanted the Omnilux, I'd probably keep wondering if I should have just bought the Omnilux.

My daughter was a different story.

At 26, she's coming at this from a completely different place than I am at 65. I'm thinking about maintaining the collagen and firmness I have, and hopefully building a little more where I can.

For her and my fingers-crossed future daughter-in-law, I bought the Solawave Wrinkle Retreat Light Therapy Mask. There happened to be a really good two-for-one deal, the reviews were good, and my daughter liked the design. For what they wanted, I thought it was a really good buy.

So I don't really think there's one "best" LED mask for everyone. Budget matters, age and goals matter, and you actually have to use the thing.

I chose Omnilux for myself and Solawave for two women I love. Obviously, I thought both were worth buying.

And Then There Was My Husband

I surprised my husband with the men's Omnilux for his birthday.

The men's version is designed with thicker male skin in mind and includes an additional, deeper-penetrating near-infrared wavelength. I thought he'd benefit from it.

What I wasn't sure about was whether he'd actually use it.

He does, which has pleasantly surprised me.

Now, three evenings a week, we often end up sitting together wearing our masks while watching our shows.

How I Use Omnilux With My NIRA

A quick word about NIRA, because I use both and they're easy to lump together.

The Omnilux replaced my LightStim, not my NIRA.

LightStim and Omnilux are both LED devices. For me, the mask was simply a much easier way to do the red light therapy I'd already been doing.

My NIRA is different. It's a non-fractional near-infrared laser, and I still use it regularly.

I did have to figure out how to fit both in because I wasn't about to spend half my evening using skincare devices.

What I've settled on is really simple.

Three nights Omnilux. Three nights NIRA. I don't use them together.

On an Omnilux night, I wash my face, put the mask on for ten minutes and do my regular skincare afterward.

I've had plenty of devices that I was excited about at first and then gradually stopped using. If something becomes a pain to use, eventually I'm going to stop using it. That's just reality.

This doesn't. Ten minutes is easy.

What Does Red Light Actually Do?

This was obviously an important part of my decision.

The Omnilux Contour uses red light at 633 nm and near-infrared light at 830 nm.

The technical term is photobiomodulation, which sounds much more complicated than it needs to. Basically, certain wavelengths of light can affect activity inside our cells.

If you've read anything about red light therapy, you've probably heard about mitochondria. The research suggests certain wavelengths can affect mitochondrial activity and cellular signaling, including processes involved in repair and collagen production.

I'll admit, I can only get so excited about mitochondria.

Eventually I want to know: What does this actually do for my skin?

There are human studies showing improvements in things like fine lines, skin texture and collagen with repeated red and near-infrared light treatments.

The collagen research is what interested me most.

At 65, I'm obviously not producing collagen at the rate I did decades ago. I'm aging. That's happening whether I own an LED mask or not.

But if there's decent evidence that I can support my skin along the way, I'm interested.

I'm already approaching that from several directions. I use tretinoin. I use vitamin C every morning. I wear sunscreen every day. I use my NIRA, and I do professional treatments when I think they're worth doing.

So after looking at the research on LED, my reaction really was, why wouldn't I add this?

Maybe the difference it makes over time is modest.

I'm okay with modest.

I'm not expecting to see some huge change from ten minutes under a mask. That's not why I'm using it.

So, Do I Actually See a Difference?

This is where it gets tricky.

I think my skin looks very good for 65. I'm happy with it.

But am I going to tell you that's because I use an Omnilux mask three times a week?

No.

I'd love to be able to tell you, "After eight weeks, this wrinkle disappeared," because that makes for a much more exciting review. But it wouldn't be true.

I do too many things for my skin.

Tretinoin, vitamin C, sunscreen, NIRA, professional treatments, nutrition, exercise, sleep. I've used all of these things together for so long that I couldn't possibly tell you which one gets credit for what.

I'm not running a clinical trial on my face. I just want to know whether I think Omnilux is worth continuing to use.

I do.

I use it three times a week without really thinking about it, and 30 minutes total isn't much of an ask.

Would I Buy It Again?

Yes.

Would I make this my first skincare investment? No.

If you're inconsistent with sunscreen, I'd spend the money there first. I'd put a good vitamin C serum and a retinoid ahead of an LED mask too.

And I don't think any woman should feel like she suddenly needs a collection of expensive devices because she's over 50. There's quite enough of that messaging aimed at us already.

For me, Omnilux came later.

What I care about now is how my skin looks five or ten years from now, not whether a device gives me some dramatic change next month.

Will I ever know exactly what Omnilux contributed? Probably not.

But it's 30 minutes a week, I actually use it, and based on what I know now, I think it's worth doing.

And I have to say, doing it alongside my husband has turned out to be an unexpected bonus.
