What Happened to BeautyCounter?

BeautyCounter, a well-known clean beauty brand, faced significant challenges in 2024 that led to its closure under its original holding company, Counter Brands, LLC. After being acquired by The Carlyle Group in 2021 for $1 billion, the company struggled with market and operational hurdles, resulting in financial losses.

By April 2024, BeautyCounter declared bankruptcy, leading to the termination of its operations, consultants, and many employees. This left customers without access to their beloved products, services, or support.

However, there’s hope for the brand’s future. Gregg Renfrew, BeautyCounter’s founder and a former CEO, returned earlier in 2024 and subsequently purchased the company out of foreclosure. She formed a new venture, G2G, with plans to relaunch BeautyCounter under a revised business model. The new iteration aims to address previous challenges but will no longer maintain the multi-level marketing consultant structure. Instead, it will focus on direct sales and improved customer relationships. The relaunch is planned for late 2024, promising to retain beloved products while re-evaluating its sales strategies and community structure.
