Holistic Dental Health = Better Skin
An Ayurvedic Dental Care Regimen for Optimal Health of your Mouth, Teeth & Gums is just what your skin and overall health needs.
Poor oral health can actually affect the appearance and health of your skin; Our systems are connected.
What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a natural system of medicine that originated in India more than 3,000 years ago. The term Ayurveda is derived from the Sanskrit words ayur (life) and veda (science or knowledge). Thus, Ayurveda literally translates to knowledge of life.
Why the Ayurvedic oral hygiene practices?
The daily habit of Ayurvedic dental care first thing in the morning helps:
- whiten your teeth
- clear out bacteria buildup in the mouth
- stop or slow down your gum receding
- cleanse the lymphatic system
- have clearer skin
How to do the Ayurvedic protocol for dental health
The first thing we should do when we wake up is to take care of our mouths. Here's how:
- Wash your hands.
- Scrape your tongue using stainless steel or copper tongue scraper. This prevents buildup of bacteria or other toxins. To practice, hold the ends of the tongue cleaner with your hands, open the mouth and stick your tongue out. Place the curved edge of the tongue cleaner on the rear surface of the tongue, as far back as is comfortable, and then press down gently on the surface of the tongue and pull the tongue cleaner forward to remove the unwanted coating. Rinse the tongue scraper with warm water and repeat three to five times, or until the tongue is free of coating and feels fresh and clean.
- Floss your teeth.
- Brush your teeth using a large amount of good fluoride-free, nontoxic toothpaste.
- Gandusha or oil pulling. This is the practice of swishing a small amount of oil in the mouth to “pull out” bacteria and toxins from the mouth.
- Take a dental probiotic. This not only helps your oral cavity, but also your skin and lymphatic system.
- Wait at least 5 minutes, and then drink your hot lemon water.
- Bonus Tip: While waiting, you can do lip scrub.
This oral care routine may seem a little too much and overwhelming. Initially, it may take 10 minutes but with practice, it may be done in 2-3 minutes every morning.
One tip to not be overwhelmed is to start build up the habit. You may start with just the daily tongue scraping and brushing and as you get into the habit, add the oil pulling.
This is now the very first thing I do each morning upon waking.
